Take and Read in 2024: Inductive Method

The whole analogy about multiple ways to skinning cats is just…gross. However, biology teacher Shannan Muskopf believes there are only two main ways. [1] Don’t visualize it. And yet, despite the visual, the general principle is true: There are multiple ways to do a thing. Even more, there are multiple ways to do good things. There are many good ways to cook a good meal, just like there are many good ways to pursue physical fitness. There are a few questions that have to be asked though: What’s the task I’m endeavoring to do? What’s the purpose behind the task? What path will help in accomplishing the task? I love the Bible. I love studying it. I get paid to preach and teach from it. I (work hard to) order my life around it. I help my kids understand it. I like praying its words with my wife. I love the Bible because it points me to where I can find life over and over—God’s Son, Jesus of Nazareth. It is certainly a witness to God’s master plan to save the world. As an eyewitness

Take and Read in 2024: Bible Reading Plans

“Resolved, to study the Scriptures so steadily, constantly and frequently, as that I may find, and plainly perceive myself to grow in the knowledge of the same.” –Jonathan Edwards, Resolution 28

A new year is upon us! By God’s grace, we'll enter 2024 in just a couple of hours from now. Do you have a list of goals that you’d like to hit? Maybe you want to pick up a set of new skills or habits in the next 366 (yes, 2024 is a Leap Year!)? I want to encourage you to start or continue in the habit of being formed by the Bible!

Maybe you’re a novice, and you’re not sure where to begin, though. Perhaps you’ve read the Bible cover-to-cover, and you want a fresh approach to reading the Scriptures. In either case, the next four posts are going to be dedicated to simply helping you read the Bible.

This first week focuses on an organized way to read the Bible: Finding the right reading plan for you. In the following below you’re going to find a selection of four different plans that you can begin reading from as early as right now; why wait for the new year to start?

Plethos’ Storyline Bible Reading Plan

This reading plan will take you through the major arc of the Bible (Creation-Fall-Redemption-Restoration) in about 150 days. It is not heavy in Old Testament content. The sections are mainly two chapters long. These features lend themselves to being accessible for new believers learning the discipline of Bible reading.

The Robert Murray M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan

I've loved using this plan in the past. Pastor Murray M’Cheyne originally created this reading plan to serve in both private and family devotion; two readings each. And his intent was for readers to move through the entire Bible in one year! Can you imagine that? Those using his plan would have the opportunity to read through Psalms and New Testament twice.

Redemptive-Historical Bible Reading Plan

Here is another plan that focuses upon the plan of salvation. The difference here over Plethos’ is its flexibility. There are 16 different categories that are filled with Scripture. Read one chapter, read 12 chapters—the choice is yours. The idea in mind was to pain Old Testament prophecies with New Testament fulfillments, thus shedding light on those promising passages.

The 90 Day Reading Plan

Here is, at last, the most aggressive reading plan I’ve found: The 90 Day Reading Plan. If you have time to—or enjoy reading—read large swathes of Scripture over the span of 30 minutes or so, this plan is for you. With two grace days built in, you should be able to read the Bible cover-to-cover in a very short time.

That’s it! How are you going to read this coming year? Next time, we will discuss how-tos and tools for reading the Bible faithfully in 2024. You game?
